The holiday season is beautiful, but let’s be honest, juggling festivities with little ones can also be a bit stressful. From unpredictable schedules to overstimulated kids, the key to truly enjoying this time of the year is preparation and flexibility. Here are some of our best tips to help you navigate the season with ease:
Be flexible with breast or bottle feeding:
Family parties often mean long meals at the table, which doesn’t always match your baby’s feeding schedule. Be sure to bring your nursing cover, it forms a peaceful cocoon for your little one under which you can breastfeed or bottle feed without distraction while sitting with family. This way, you can enjoy your meal yourself while feeding your baby in comfort.
Feed your baby beforehand:
Let’s face it, kids often stuff themselves with chips or cheese during appetizers, which means their tummies are already full. Or they have to wait a long time for the meal and are hungry and get hangry. Consider offering your little ones a snack or small meal ahead of time, such as soup or fruit and raw greens. That way, they already have something healthy inside and have the freedom to still join in aperitifs and try new things while the adults enjoy the snacks. Check out our leak-proof pouches, ideal for eating snacks from in the car.
Exchange gifts at the right time:
Avoid tantrums and over-stimulation by saving presents until after little ones have already eaten something. If you meet their basic needs (such as hunger) first, you avoid hassles and create a calmer, more enjoyable time for everyone.
Don't forget snacks for outdoor adventures:
Winter hikes and nature outings are almost a tradition here in Belgium after dinner together. It’s not only refreshing for yourself but also great for your kids to be able to let loose outside after having to be “tough” inside for a long time. But remember, by the time you go out for some fresh air after dessert, your little ones may already be hungry again, especially if they’ve eaten earlier! Keep snacks on hand in handy pouches that you can easily grab and carry with you. It’s a lifesaver when you’re outside in the cold and need to keep your little tummies satisfied.
Maintain a familiar bedtime routine, wherever you are:
Being away from home and busyness often disrupt sleep patterns, but bringing familiar bedtime essentials can ease the transition. Bring warm pajamas, their favorite teddy or blanket, a cherished bedtime book and a cozy nightlight to create a familiar environment for them. Whether you stay overnight or let the little ones sleep in the field already and then get them out of their beds to go home. Another tip if you let them stay up is to already start the bedtime routine, such as putting on pajamas at the end of the party. When it’s time to leave, it helps your little ones settle down already and they may fall asleep in the car, or you can put them to bed faster once you get home.
