Summer is just around the corner, and with it come those golden sunny days we dream of all winter. But if you’ve got little ones at home, you know those warm rays can also bring a bit of a parenting fuzz: sticky sunscreen battles, cranky babies waking up after stroller naps, and overheated toddlers who just won’t. stop. running.

Let’s talk about our real hacks that help make sunny outings smoother for both you and your little ones.

🌤 Sunscreen: The when (and how) that makes all the difference

Yes, we all know sunscreen is a must, but here’s something not everyone tells you: put it on before you leave the house.  About 20–30 minutes before heading out is ideal. This gives it time to absorb and reduces the mess of trying to apply it when your toddler just wants to run to the slide.

🧴 Do it while they’re in their high chair or sitting on the floor. They’re already still (ish), and it becomes part of the leaving-the-house routine.

✅ Don’t forget these spots: ears, back of the neck, top of the feet, and back of the hands are often left unprotected.

✨ Sunscreen in spray bottles can be a lifesaver for wiggly kids. But if you prefer lotion (which often protects better), keep a big, soft makeup brush just for sunscreen. It makes application way easier and your hands stay clean!

😎 Stroller naps 101

Ever seen a baby wake up from a stroller nap hot and sweaty with the sun blasting on their cheeks? Here’s how to prevent that:

  • Use a stroller sunshade that attaches securely and covers well without blocking airflow. (Hint: our Sun Cocoon is universal, lightweight, breathable, and easy to adjust as the sun moves.)
  • PLEASE never cover the stroller completely with blankets, sweaters, or even a muslin cloth. It might seem like a good way to block out the sun, but it actually traps heat and blocks ventilation. Babies can quickly overheat in such conditions.
  • Use natural shade whenever possible: walk on the shady side of the street or use buildings and trees to your advantage.

👒 Why skip baby sunglasses (Yes, really)

We know it, those tiny baby sunglasses look just adorable. But if I am honest: they stay on for about 2.5 seconds. Instead, go for a light hat with a soft chin strap. It’ll protect their face and eyes without the constant battle of picking up tossed sunglasses for the 11th time.

💦 Keep things cool

  • Freeze a small wet wash cloth the night before and pop it in your bag. It’s amazing how soothing it feels on the neck or forehead after playtime in the sun.
  • Pack hydrating snacks, like watermelon slices or cucumber sticks in a leak-proof container (our Yummy Bag or Yummy Grab&Go are ideal, no spills, easy access)
  • Take off their shoes during long stroller rides, hot little feet = grumpy little people.

Summer is a beautiful time for memory-making. Don’t overplan. One shaded park visit or a simple ice cream picnic in your garden is more than enough. Your child doesn’t need an agenda, they just need you, the sun (safely!), and a little space to explore.
