Expressing milk at work: What I’ve learned (and what you might find useful too)

Let me start by saying this: I’ve been there, three times! I breastfed and expressed milk at work for each of my children (sometimes also during work trips) until they were 2 years old. It wasn’t always easy, but with a little preparation, some mom-to-mom tips, and the right tools, it is possible.

So if you’re heading back to work and wondering how to manage expressing milk during the day, read here what helped me, and what might help you too 💛

📅 Plan your pumping schedule

Try to pump around the same times you would normally feed your baby. This helps your body maintain milk production. If you can, block those times in your calendar, it’s a small boundary that makes a big difference.

If you work in an office environment where colleagues might be around during lunch breaks, check out our Nursing Cocoon. It’s also ideal for a little extra privacy while pumping.

Talk openly with your employer and check the regulations for your sector or country. Depending on where you live or the type of job you have, there are often specific rights that allow breaks for breastfeeding or pumping. That way, your breastfeeding journey doesn’t have to be cut short when you return to work.

🧼 Keep things clean and easy

Hygiene is important when you’re pumping on the go. That’s where our new Yummy Clean Set comes in. It’s designed to help you clean bottles, breast pump parts, and Yummy products, even at work or on the move. No more wondering how to wash everything in that tiny office sink.

No more carrying a small towel or muslin cloth to quickly air dry parts! That is so inconvenient.

🍼 Store your milk safely

Once pumped, your milk deserves the best storage. I used (and still use!) our Yummy Bag: it’s leakproof, foldable, writable, and super easy to clean. It keeps your milk safe, whether it’s in the fridge at work or in your bag on the way home. And honestly, it’s just one less thing to worry about.

💡 Boost your let-down with a little baby magic

Pumping without your baby near can be tricky. Here’s what helped me trigger that let-down reflex:

  • A little video or voice memo of your baby (that cooing and giggling work wonders)
  • Just looking at a few photos on your phone
  • A piece of clothing or blanket that smells like your little one

Our bodies are so smart. These little things can make your body say, “Oh! Baby time!” even when you’re miles away.

💼 Pack smart

Here’s my go-to list for a day at work:

Mama, you’ve got this. Whether you’re pumping at the office, at school, in the car, or somewhere in a quiet corner—it’s still breastfeeding. And it’s amazing.

I cheer you on, from one working mama to another,

Lots of love,

Sarah
